Hi, Friend!

I’m always looking for things that bring me joy and then leaning into them whenever and wherever I can. And the things that bring me joy are not necessarily the same things that bring other people joy, so when I find something, I have to confidently own it and let my own freak flag fly.

That’s how I ended up planning my 30th high school reunion. It’s coming up in August. No, I wasn’t the senior class president. No, I wasn’t a popular girl. No, I haven’t attended many of the other reunions (in fact, I’ve only been to one in the past 30 years). No, I haven’t even really stayed in touch with many people at all.

But this time around, I decided it would bring me joy to plan a week-long extravaganza. My little inner compass needle was going crazy at the thought of curating some community-building gatherings and reconnecting with people.

I asked the class prez if she was okay if I planned it instead of her, and she was relieved. So here we are, a mere 30-something days away from the party.

And it is bringing me so much joy. There are eight of us going on a 4-day cruise to Cozumel. And we are bringing eighties costumes for the 80s Rock & Glow party! And 60s/70s costumes for the Motown party!

Y’all, I am not a cruise person. But the thought of going to a dance party every night with old friends? Yes, please. The thought of lounging by the pool without having to remind teenage boys to reapply sunscreen? Yes, please.

Once we get back to shore, a much larger group joins us for a Friday night shuffle board gathering, a Saturday open-mic lunch thing and dinner/dancing/drinks, and then a Sunday brunch.

My point is not that everyone should plan their high school reunions. Not at all! But, we should all ask ourselves: What would bring more joy into my life at this moment? And then lean into it, even if others might judge us for it. And bonus points if the thing brings more connection and community into our lives.
