Deep Conversations
Hi, Friend!
My in-laws were passing through Austin last week, and I had a chance to have a deep conversation with my mother-in-law during dinner. I was explaining that I had to head straight to band rehearsal after dinner, and she commended me for exploring “who Sara is” beyond my role as wife and mother.
She talked about how she wished she would’ve done that for herself sooner. She talked about how much of our lives and identities can get wrapped up with our children and how hard it is when they leave home and you feel a gaping hole.
I like to spend time reading through “empty nest” and “retirement” and “grown and flow” groups on social media because it widens my perspective so much, but it was so lovely to hear wise insights from someone in my actual life. I wish I had more intergenerational community in my life.
My mother-in-law affirmed that I’m on the right track by trying to 1) strengthen my health and wellness 2) grow my friend network and 3) develop my hobbies and interests more.
This Week’s Random Tidbits
Fiction Book I’m Obsessed with: The Trouble with Heroes (a Young Adult novel). It’s written entirely in verse. Normally, I would hate that approach, but it is done so well in this novel.
